Jay Chapman

abbreviated biography

Short focused bio gives you some idea of who is behind the camera.  Also, shares with you my reasons for loving photography.

Born in southern Illinois, 1956

Small-town kid, jock, college athlete, Navy Veteran, & retired Department of Defense (DoD) Senior Technical Intelligence Officer.

First camera: Canon AE-1 film camera.  Served me well as I flew around the world with the Navy as an airborne Cryptologic Technician Technical (CTT).  CTT's were "Spooks" who specialized in the highly detail-oriented discipline of Electronic Intelligence (ELINT).

I enjoyed photography during my Navy years because it allowed me to capture events/moments that I didn't want to forget!  I still treasure my old photos.

From the Navy, I became a DoD Intelligence Officer.  To a large extent, my deeper love for photography came to light during the middle era of my DoD intelligence career when I incorporated aerial, satellite, and hand-held imagery into my intelligence products.  Loved the science behind imagery collection and analysis.

Why Cycling Photography now?  It's simply fun to capture and catalog the limitless facial expressions of strength, suffering, and satisfaction!  As a rider myself, I know the "bicycle faces".

I also enjoy capturing and discovering details, in the photography of landscapes, nature, and classic cars, many of which typically go unnoticed.  Not unlike why I enjoyed my earlier detail-oriented "ELINT" work and a long career in scientific & technical Intelligence.

Today, I'm a shutterbug, cyclist, and pack leader. I live in the scenic foothills of the Sandia Mountains, New Mexico with my lovely wife (we met in the Navy.) our canine pals, abundant high desert wildlife, and a variety of nearby farm animals!

Everything else is just history or on a Need-to-Know Basis!
